Blackjack Mistaks:

Some beginners think the best way to play is to play the same way the dealer plays: Hit all sixteens and stand on all seventeens. This is not true. The object of the game is not to make a hand as close to 21 as possible, but to beat the dealer. Often the best way to do this is to stand with a low total, sometimes as low as 12.

Tip: Here’s how many players think: If I hit this 14, I risk busting my hand right here and now. But maybe the dealer has a 6 in the hole. If I don’t take a hit, my hand still has a chance. Maybe the dealer’s hand will bust.

Every player is afraid that he will be responsible for his own loss. But that 14 you are holding is already in dire jeopardy when the dealer shows a 10 up. You must fight for the hand’s survival by taking the hit, giving it a chance of becoming a stronger hand against that 10. With a 14 against a 10, you must fight to the death.

On the other hand, if the dealer’s upcard is 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, and you are holding a stiff hand, you should stand. Since the dealer must hit his stiff hands, and chance busting even when you are stiff, hitting your weak hands is not advantageous against these weak upcards.

Mistake: Some beginners think the best way to play is to play the same way the dealer plays: Hit all sixteens and stand on all seventeens. This is not true. The object of the game is not to make a hand as close to 21 as possible, but to beat the dealer. Often the best way to do this is to stand with a low total, sometimes as low as 12.

Tip: This is the basic logic of casino blackjack. There are exceptions to these guidelines, as the actual basic strategy decision for any given hand is determined by working out all of the mathematical probabilities. But if you just consider this logic when studying the basic strategy charts, the pattern will become clear to you and it should not be too difficult to memorize.

Is it possible to cheat at a slot machine? Of course. The most common form of cheating is known as “claiming,” whereby a player contacts a casino employee and says that her machine hit but her payout either didn’t come at all or, when it did come, it was short.
With today’s modern slot machines a casino employee can usually tell if the player is telling the truth, so unless there’s a tremendous amount of money involved, the player is given the benefit of the doubt. And today’s modern casinos are under constant and thorough camera surveillance. Cheaters can not only be found but also be easily convicted in court.

There is little dispute that the first twenty-one games appeared in France in the early-to-mid-seventeen hundreds. The game was called vingt-un, or “twenty-one,” when it was initially introduced, and was later more commonly called oingt-et-un. The name “blackjack” was not used until the twentieth century, when the game was being played in the mostly illegal casinos in America.
Because vingt-un first appeared as a private game, and was not banked by the casinos, we will never know in which French casino the game was first played. It was the custom of the time for the casinos in Europe to bank various popular games¬notably roulette, hazard, trente-et-quarante, faro, and baccarat. Roulette was the most popular house-banked casino game in virtually all casinos where the game was legal. Hazard was a dice game that was the predecessor to craps. Faro was a variation of an older card game called bassette. But the casinos also allowed players who wanted to gamble in other popular card or dice games to do so if one of the players was willing to deal and bank the game, with the house taking a commission (usually 5 percent) on the banker’s winnings. This was most common with baccarat, the player-banked variation being called chemin-de-fer.

“Comp” is a casino slang term for “complimentary.” These are the perks you get from slot clubs, as described above. Even if you are not a member of the slot club, immediately after you arrive at that casino, call the operator on the house phone and ask for a slot host. This person is employed by the casino to look after the good players. If you are not yet known at that casino, call the slot host anyway, and introduce yourself. Ask to join the slot club, and the host will help you do that immediately. While you are doing this, ask for the “casino rate.” This is a room rate with a substantial discount over the published room rate and is offered to, and reserved for, the casino players. Membership in the slot club will also help you master the slots strategy.

Only slot hosts, casino hosts, and casino executives can get this rate for your room. By asking for the host immediately, you are likely to get this rate right away, offered by the host in anticipation of your slot action. If you then play little, you will get the rate this time, but maybe not next time, but the point is you did get it this time. If you play a lot and are a good player, then your play will justify that offer, and that will most likely result in your getting other perks, such as the room for free, or an upgrade to a suite, or the total “RF&B,” meaning free room, food, and beverage. You will also make a contact at that casino, and the host will give you his or her business card, with a special reservation number available only to casino guests. From that time on, you will be able to call in and usually get a room even if the hotel is “sold out.” This is because each hotel keeps a portion of their rooms always reserved for casino guests. If you live near the casino and don’t stay at the hotel, then contact the host anyway.

You will get to know someone at the casino at a level which can get you a lot of perks and other help, now and in the future. You may be able to get free dinners, buffets, show tickets, special party invitations, play your favorite slot games anytime and a whole lot of other neat stuff.

Always join the slot club, if one is available at your casino, regardless of whether or not you plan to play slots tournaments. Most casinos will have a slot club, because it helps them keep track of their good players and other customers they otherwise may have missed. Even if you are not planning to play slots at that casino, you may become interested in playing some machines after you look around, and so joining the slot club will only help you. Most casinos will offer some kind of an incentive to join, such as a free buffet, a two-for-one dinner, a show, extra points, or something like that. Many Las Vegas casinos, from time to time, also offer a guaranteed “no loss” policy for new members of their slot club, usually up to $100. This means that if you don’t book a win during your first playing session (24 to 48 hours, mostly), the casino will refund you up to $100 of your total loss. It’s a nice way to enjoy the slots, and that casino, and to know that no matter what happens, you will get at least some money back.

Most of the time, joining the slot clubs will bring you benefits later on. If you play slots for even short amounts of time, your play will accumulate. The casino will then recognize you as one of their preferred customers, and you are likely to begin receiving lots and lots of special perks. Most often, you will receive an immediate invitation to return, and this may include free rooms, food, beverages, or at least discounted rooms and other offers, depending on your level of play. Some casinos also offer cash back for your earned points, and therefore it is always a good idea to join the slot club in every casino you visit. If you are a frequent casino visitor, and come to destinations such as Las Vegas, which has many casinos in a relatively small area, then you can easily join several slot clubs at once. Most of the time you will get at least something from each of them, and so you can easily get perks from several casinos, even if you don’t play there, or don’t play there very much. You may, in fact, find out that this casino is very good, and then be able to come back to it again and again. At the very least, you will be able to visit several different casinos and experience their slot clubs.

You should always compare the clubs, because they are all different, and sometimes very different. While at one casino, you may qualify for a free dinner after, say, 200 earned points, at another casino this may take 2,000 earned points. Always find out how many dollars through the machine - known as “action” - it takes to earn 1 point, and then how many points you must earn to get any of the perks this club offers. Then compare this to other slot clubs, and find the one which gives you the most. However, do not select your casino for slot play based only on the offers they give from the slot club. You may find that this casino has slots which are set tighter then other casinos whose slot club policies may not be as liberal. In the end, always select your casino based on the availability of the good machines, and then consider the slot club secondarily. When you do everything together, correctly, you will find that by adding the perks you get from your slot play from the slot club or playing free blackjack, combined with the wins you get on the machines, combined with the losses you save by playing the good machine correctly, it will all add up to a nice overall profit in the end. And that’s where a large portion of your powerful profits from slots will come from.

It’s inevitable. Machines are machines. They break down. The most common breakdown is a coin jam, a ticket jam, or a bill acceptor malfunction. If it happens to you, and it will, then just put the light on and wait for the employee to show up. Most of the time they can fix the problem right then and there, and you can go on playing. On rare occasions, they may have to call a slot mechanic. If this happens, you will wait a little longer. However, if you can’t wait, then just tell that to the floorperson, and they will hand-pay you whatever amount of credits you have accumulated, and you can go. They will then shut the machine down, and the slot mechanic will get to it whenever he can. Just don’t worry about it if this happens. You didn’t break it. Take it easy, relax, have a drink, and wait. Think of the money you are saving by having this relaxing time, waiting. Ofcourse, you can play blackjack instead of slots while machine is being repaired. Then, when it’s repaired, go on with your play and win.

One: Play with a dedicated and sufficient bankroll, made up of money which is free and unencumbered and not “scared.”

Two: Play rested, emotionally stable, and without being affected by alcohol, drugs, or any other casino distraction.

Always play maximum coins. If you can’t afford this, don’t play until you can afford it. Don’t play without an adequate bankroll, which allows you to play with sufficient capital to wager maximum coins, and force the machine to pay back at its optimum preprogrammed percentage, and to pay you the maximum pays which are available. Don’t play affected by alcohol, sleep deprivation, drugs, or any other chemical. Play rested, and play focused. Select the better machines, and play with enough of a session stake to give the machine the best play you can. Read “Keys to Winning” again.
